Non-Centrosymmetric Cylindrical Micelles by Unidirectional Growth

Paul A. RuparLaurent ChabanneMitchell A. Winnikand Ian Manners Science 3 August 2012: 337 (6094), 559-562.
Block copolymers self assemble in solution to form cylindrical micelles. These micelles are "corona capped" by cross linking polylactide arms. The center portion is then selectively degraded by the addition of a decane solution. The two daughter micelles are then capable of incorporating new BCPs, but only in one direction. They create ABA and ABC cylindrical micelles and demonstrate that these structures can further assemble into star-like super micelles.
