NHC complexes, photochemistry

Photoactivation of metal–halogen bonds in a Ni(II) NHC complex†
Chang Hoon Lee, Daniel A. Lutterman and Daniel G. Nocera*

The complex [NiII(μ-Cl)Cl(IPr)]2 was photolyzed to yield [NiI(μ-Cl)(IPr)], and generating chloride anions.  If they could get this latter complex (or a similar one) to turn over, they might have a means by which they can convert solar energy to hydrogen gas.
