An integrated encyclopedia of DNA elements in the human genome

The ENCODE project consortium (consists of many authors)

Multiple papers were published in Nature and other journals regarding the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project. These authors were able to identify biochemical function for the vast amounts of DNA outside of known gene sequences, thereby assigning roles to over 80% of the genome beyond protein-coding genes. Many of these previously unknown functions are associated with gene regulation and genetic disease.
