Monofunctionalized Gold Nanoparticles Stabilized by a Single Dendrimer Form Dumbbell Structures upon Homocoupling

Gold nanoparticles are stabilized by thioester-linked dendrimers. Two monofunctionalized nanoparticles can then be linked together to create dumbell shaped nanoparticle dimers.  NaH is used to efficiently assemble the dendrimers legs and the TIPS protected stem of the dendrimers are deprotected and then linked together via oxidative coupling with CuCl and TMEDA to create the dumbbells which can be visualized by TEM.
