Conjugated -olyparaphenylenes and similar polyarylenes were synthesized from alkyne containing polymers and either norbornadiene and dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate with Wilkinson's catalyst, Rh(PPh3)3Cl to make phenyl containing polymers, or with nonanenitrile and catalystic system consisting of cobalt(II) chloride, zinc, and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane to make pyridine containing polymers, both in a [2+2+2] fashion.
The alkyne containing polymers were synthesized by sonagashira polymerization of f 1,6-heptadiyne and 1,4-bis(hexadecyloxy)-2,5-diiodobenzene, as seen in figure below. Their properties were characterized through IR, NMR, UV-vis, and GPC.
