Nanopattern Fabrication of Gold on Hydrogels and Application to Tunable Photonic Crystal

Pattern fabrication was performed by transcribing Au nano-dots from Si to the hydrogel surface. The nano-dots exhibited excellent adhesion despite extensive hydrogel expansion and contraction. Au nano-dots on a hydrogel can produce iridescent color, and its spectral response can be finely modulated by controlling the nano-dot spacing. This is a novel tunable photonic crystal made from soft and wet matter.


Color change of nano-patterned PAA gel immersed in different NaCl concentrations. Numbers denote the Au dot spacings: (1) 500 nm, (2) 150 nm, (3) 400 nm, (4) 350 nm, (5) 550 nm, (6) 250 nm, (7) 300 nm, (8) 450 nm and (9) 200 nm.
